History behind this Scenario

This is my first attempt to create a scenario for ATF. It depicts an actual Heavy Light Rotation at NTC in 1987. During this rotation I was attached from the TOW Platoon, HHC 3 Bn 17 Infantry Regt. (L), 7th Infantry Division (L) to the Tarantula (Light) Team as an OC in the Starwars Building.

This rotation consisted of a BCT of 5th Infantry Division (Mech) and attached to it the 4th Battalion 21st Infantry Regt. (L), 7 Infantry Division (Light). The 5th ID units depicted while may not be the actual units. They are the units assigned to the 1 Bde. 5th ID.

Brief History of the actual Battle

TF 4-21 Inf was given the mission to infiltrate on foot, (LD was after 2000 hours) from the BCT's AA to an Attack Position (around 0300). Attack and destroy the OPFOR's CSOP, create 4 breaches, hold the terrain and on order to pass through the main attack force (NET 0500 and NLT 0600). The BCT Commander, denied TF 4-21 INF any vehicles, any relay stations for communication from the TF to the BCT Command, etc. that might compromise their TF and their mission. Furthermore, they DID NOT have Artillery support to complete their mission. Only indirect fire allowed was TF 4-21 Inf's organic mortars.

The outcome was a surprise to many. TF 4-21 Inf attacked and destroyed the OPFOR's CSOP, but forced the OPFOR to withdraw back. By around 0600, there was no OPFOR within 3 KM of TF 4-21. Also TF 4-21 Inf had created at least 4 breaches through the obstacle belt. However, since TF 4-21 INF only communication was with AN/PRC-77s (range approx. 8KM), they were unable to notify the BCT Cdr of this. Between 0600 and 0700, the OPFOR regrouped and counter-attacked TF 4-21 Inf. They forced TF 4-21 Inf to withdraw and were able to close the breaches and reestablished the CSOP. The end result was that the main attack LD 0700 and ran right into a wall of OPFOR. The BCT FAILED TO ACHIEVE the BCT's Mission.
